Democratizing Book Digitization

In 2014, ManGo Product Design was approached with a bold but refreshingly simple question: why does digitizing books have to cost as much as a small car? At the time, automatic book scanners were already available, but prices typically started around 50.000 dollars and quickly climbed higher. That put them well out of reach for most libraries, schools and consumers. The goal was clear: develop an automatic book scanner that is affordable, easy to use and capable of delivering professional results, without requiring a PhD in scanning or a second mortgage.

Learning from What Didn’t Work

Early research revealed an active online community of universities and makers building DIY book scanners. Open-source designs, 3D models, software and instructions were widely shared. So we did the logical thing: we built the most advanced open-source scanner available at the time. And then discovered that, in practice, almost nothing worked as promised. Instead of giving up, we rolled up our sleeves. Over the course of a year, ManGo re-engineered the mechanics, electronics  and software interactions, gradually turning good intentions into a system that actually worked; reliably, repeatably and without drama

Mechatronics That Do the Heavy Lifting

The final design is a fully automatic, linear book scanner that digitizes books at 300 DPI with a speed of up to 1.500 pages per hour. The system carefully handles books of various sizes and thicknesses, automatically flipping pages and capturing clean images that can be converted into searchable digital text using OCR software. Behind the scenes, a precisely tuned combination of mechanics, electronics and control logic ensures consistent page handling and image quality. For the user, it’s refreshingly simple: load the book, start the scan and let the machine do what it’s good at.

Built to Be Used, Not Just Admired

Beyond performance, the scanner was designed to be practical and approachable. It is easy to assemble, intuitive to operate and visually distinct, with a clean, slightly futuristic appearance that fits both public spaces and home environments. By focusing on smart mechatronics instead of overcomplicated solutions, ManGo helped bring high-speed book digitization within reach of a much wider audience. Proof that sometimes innovation isn’t about making things more complex, it’s about making powerful technology accessible to everyone who actually wants to use it.
