Meeting a Growing Need in Homecare
Severo from IMS Medical is the global market leader in professional pill grinding equipment, used by healthcare professionals to help patients with swallowing difficulties or dementia take their medication safely. As homecare expanded rapidly, nurses needed a portable version of the trusted Severo grinder; something compact, reliable and easy to carry between patients. The existing tabletop machine, designed a decade earlier, was too large, too heavy and visually outdated. ManGo was asked to develop a new, handheld solution that delivered the same professional grinding performance in a far more mobile form.
From Desktop Machine to Handheld Solution
Working closely with IMS Medical, ManGo rethought the device from the inside out. The grinding mechanism was completely redesigned and engineered to be twelve times smaller than the original, while maintaining consistent grinding particle size and safe operation (prevent nurses inhaling medicine particles). To enable true portability, a rechargeable battery was integrated, supported by a newly developed PCBA with a cleaner, more intuitive built-in user interface. Multiple prototype cycles were used not only to validate grinding quality, but also to test ergonomics, weight balance and the vibration forces experienced by nurses during repeated daily use.
Engineered for Everyday Care
The new handheld design required tight packaging of all mechanical and electronic components within a compact, hygienic enclosure. Each mechanical component was custom designed and optimized for durability, manufacturability and ease of assembly. Prototypes were tested for vibration dampening, comfort, reliability and compliance with medical-grade performance expectations. Through iterative refinement, ManGo created a design that feels stable in the hand and operates smoothly.
Reliable Performance, Ready for Production
The handheld Severo is assembled in the Netherlands by IMS Medical, using precision-engineered components sourced from partners within ManGo’s network. The streamlined supply chain and efficient production setup keep quality high and costs low. After launch, the new device quickly proved to be so effective, user-friendly and cost-efficient that it fully replaced the original desktop model in the product line. The handheld Severo now sets the new standard for portable medication preparation, supporting nurses and improving patient care wherever it’s needed.
