Princess Traveller: Suitcase Design That Goes the Distance
Some partnerships are built around a single project. Others grow through years of shared ambition. For over a decade, ManGo Product Design has worked closely with Princess Traveller to design travel products that address real frustrations, from broken suitcase wheels to misplaced passports. Across multiple collections, including Suit My Case and the Red Dot-recognized Safety Collection, the focus has remained the same: smarter suitcase design, a better user experience, and products built to last. Together, we have turned everyday travel annoyances into opportunities for innovation.
Suit My Case: Repairable, Customizable, Yours
The Suit My Case project started with a simple but costly problem: broken wheels. Wheels that cannot be replaced are a common reason suitcases are discarded and can also lead to costly warranty replacements. Rather than designing another fixed solution, ManGo and Princess Traveller asked a different question: what if consumers could replace parts themselves and customize their suitcase from the start?
The result is a modular trolley system that users can assemble without tools. Shells zip together, wheels click into place, and custom caps snap on, turning repair into a feature and customization into an experience. Replacement parts remain available online, allowing travelers to repair wear and tear themselves instead of replacing the entire suitcase. Sustainability, ownership, and fun come together in one instantly recognizable suitcase.
Designed for Real Use, Tested in Practice
Designing a suitcase with replaceable parts without compromising strength is easier said than done. Permanently fixed components are generally easier to engineer for strength, so the click-in parts required extensive prototyping and testing. Multiple concepts were developed, refined, and tested in real-world travel conditions by Princess Traveller and ManGo team members. Feedback from these tests led to several improvements, resulting in a suitcase that is sturdy, easy to assemble, and ready for many miles of travel. ManGo also designed the complete unboxing experience, guiding users step by step through assembly. The online configurator allows customers to mix and match colors, making each suitcase easy to spot on the baggage carousel. After all, travel is stressful enough without having to guess which of the many black suitcases is yours.
Safety Collection: Peace of Mind, Designed In
Beyond modularity and customization, Princess Traveller challenged ManGo to solve another familiar frustration: misplacing or fumbling for travel documents. The solution came from looking at what was already there. The extendable handle offered unused internal space in exactly the right location. ManGo developed a discreet, integrated safety compartment that keeps passports and boarding passes secure and accessible during travel.
After multiple prototype rounds and field tests, the design was finalized, patented internationally, and introduced as the Princess Traveller Safety Collection. The concept improved comfort and peace of mind for travelers. In 2018, the Safety Collection received a Red Dot Honourable Mention, recognizing a solution that is simple, clever, and strongly focused on the user.
